CAD
I spent the first part of my career as a draughtsman and learnt to use CAD in the early 1980's. CAD was used for all sorts of projects from small residential extensions to huge blocks of flats in Surrey Quays. Working for MHK Architects I worked on CAD drawings for Greenland Passage, Columbia Wharf, Winkleys Wharf & Lawrence Wharf. At this time the Isle of Dogs just across the river was almost empty. I still do CAD drawings today mainly for Proto Glass Studios who along with various artists create amazing decorative glass installations using a variety of techniques.
CAD Projects
P&O Iona. Emerald Bar - Deck 6 Atrium
I created the drawings for 20 pieces of glass at the back of the Emerald Bar on P&O's cruise ship Iona.
The glass was cut directly from the CAD drawings. The "Sun Burst" pattern was etched by hand and the coloured lines where printed onto film and stuck to the rear of the glass.
Unfortunately P&O have then installed perspex sheets in front of the glass and along with all the reflections made it very difficult to take any photos.
St. Mary's Church, Southampton
Proto Glass Studios took detailed measurements of the arch. The glass was cut directly from the CAD drawing and fitted into a U channel that was fixed to the arch.
Bilbury Court
The existing glass had been damaged so Proto Glass Studios replaced it and used the CAD drawing to create an overlay so as the pattern could be etched onto new glass.
London Business School - Sammy Ofer Centre
In 2013, Idan Ofer donated £25 million to his
alma mater
the London Business School through the
Idan and Batia Ofer Foundation. As a result of the charitable gift, the largest private donation the school has ever
received, the LBS built the Sammy Ofer Centre in 2017 in honor of his father.
Financial Times
Proto Glass Studios hung coloured glass shapes on rods that were connected to the two main cross beams of the Sammy Ofer Centre.
Surrey Quays - London SE16
Whilst working for MHK Architects I was involved with a number of projects at Surrey Quays just opposite the Isle of Dogs and today's Canary Wharf.
MHK along with Danish Architects built flats at Greenland Passage, Winkleys Wharf, Columbia Wharf and Lawrence Wharf. Part of Lawrence Wharf is now the Hilton Riverside hotel.
